Today, Senate Majority Caucus Whip Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) spoke at a press conference regarding the closure of the North Riverside Welcoming Center for Immigrants.

The center was forced to close after the Rauner administration eliminated its funding.

“The decision to not fund the North Riverside Welcoming Center for Immigrants is wrong and deeply troubling,” Martinez said. “Once again, the Rauner administration has demonstrated a disheartening lack of compassion by cutting essential programs that help our state’s newest residents get situated.”

Welcoming Centers are a lifeline for immigrants in Illinois. They offer classes and provide information on employment training and home ownership.

The legislative budget that Senator Martinez voted for would adequately fund Welcoming Centers next year.

Senator Martinez is a long-time advocate of Welcoming Centers and other programs that help immigrants succeed.
