Martinez Press ConferenceSpringfield — Majority Caucus Whip and Latino Caucus Co-Chair Senator Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) is partnering with the Illinois Coalition of Community Blood Centers to encourage Latinos to donate blood.

Despite being the largest minority group in the United States, Latinos have a low blood donation rate.

Although less than four percent of blood donations are from Latinos, the majority of Latinos have type O blood. Type O blood is in high demand because it is the universal donor, making it important for more Latinos to donate blood.

Martinez is working with the state’s blood centers on a statewide campaign to increase awareness within the Latino community of the vital need for donating blood.

Last week, Senator Martinez spoke along with other members of the Latino Caucus at a press conference organized by the Illinois Coalition of Community Blood Centers.
