Senator Martinez Legislation to Foster
Safer Communities Signed into Law
Springfield, IL - Recently, State Senator Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) sponsored a new law signed by Governor Pat Quinn that will assist in keeping communities safe by requiring more sex offenders to register with the State. House Bill 1253 requires sex offenders who were convicted of sex crimes before the establishment of the Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) to register with the state if they commit a felony after the effective date.
Under SORA, convicted sex offenders are assigned a risk levels, required to register with the state and local law enforcement and comply with other requirements to ensure public safety.
