Senator Martinez Legislation to Foster
Safer Communities Signed into Law

Springfield, IL - Recently, State Senator Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) sponsored a new law signed by Governor Pat Quinn that will assist in keeping communities safe by requiring more sex offenders to register with the State. House Bill 1253 requires sex offenders who were convicted of sex crimes before the establishment of the Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) to register with the state if they commit a felony after the effective date.

Under SORA, convicted sex offenders are assigned a risk levels, required to register with the state and local law enforcement and comply with other requirements to ensure public safety.

Martinez Supports Legislation for Pregnant Women
In the Women in the Workplace


Springfield, IL - State Senator Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) co-sponsored Senate Bill 1122 signed by Governor Pat Quinn that disallows employers from changing the conditions of employment for any women on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions.

“This common sense legislation provides new mothers with a tool to fight workplace discrimination,” Senator Martinez said. “Bringing new life should not allow employers the ability to impose new working conditions that strain mothers that recently gave birth or have medical conditions due to pregnancy.”

Senator Martinez Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month


 

 Springfield, IL – Yesterday, State Senator Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) presented purple ribbons to members of the Illinois State Senate in commemoration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

”The ramifications of domestic violence are staggering,” Senator Martinez said. “Women are among the most vulnerable, suffering the highest rates of intimate partner violence.”
