04272017CM0704 rSPRINGFIELD —Majority Caucus Whip Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) is vowing to continue to oppose federal policies that harm immigrant communities in the wake of the Trump administration’s decision to end protection for hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans living and working in the United States.

“Kicking more than 200,000 people out of the country they have come to call home is shockingly cruel, even for such an anti-immigrant administration,” Martinez said. “These men and women contribute greatly to our society, and they deserve to be here as much as anyone else.”

Trump announced earlier this week that he is ending Temporary Protected Status for people who came to the United States from El Salvador following devastating earthquakes in the country in 2001.

“We are talking about people who have called our country home for more than 15 years,” Martinez said. “Telling them to pack up and leave after they have worked so hard to establish a life for themselves here goes against everything we stand for as Americans.”
